Overview
The southern regions of Somalia carried both trade and struggle
Somalia’s southern regions, especially Lower Shabelle and Lower Juba, have long been important to the country’s economic life because of fertile land, river valleys, farming, livestock, and trade routes connected to the coast and interior.
Under Italian colonial expansion, many local communities experienced forced labor, land pressure, political exclusion, and attempts to control riverine resources. Resistance emerged from different communities, including the Biimaal.
